 This podcast is about how design affects our lives. It is much better than it sounds. The host, Roman Mars, covers a wide amount of topics, and the podcast is also well-designed. Each episode is under 30 minutes. Sometimes the episodes are pretentious, but it has also introduced me to some ideas and people I never would have heard of otherwise. 5/5.

 Spindictators is one of those rare books where the title tells you all you need to know about the book. It talks about a more modern form of totalitarianism, where the authoritarians in power use spin rather than fear to maintain their grip on their populace. It  is written by political scientists, so they do backup their thesis with research, it seems to be attached to idealistic. Unfortunately, the book was released before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. I say unfortunately because Putin is held up as the ultimate example of someone who doesn't use fear to control the population of his country, but uses spin to do so. Putin was of course really great at doing so for many years. And for many years he was much more effective than a more brutal dictator such as Hitler. The African Lion

  So some of you may know about my project to watch all the films that were or have been or will be released by Walt Disney Studios and this is certainly one of them. It's part of a documentary series called True Life Adventures, which uses footage that was filmed in Africa in a 30-month period. It's a documentary about lions mostly, but it does focus on other animals in Africa. There are two main reasons to watch this film and two main reasons to avoid it. Well, maybe three reasons, to watch it and one reason to avoid it.  The first reason is if you want to watch all Disney films this is certainly a Disney film, so you should watch it, although there's no animation or anything that really makes it a Disney film. The second reason to watch it is connected to the reason not to watch it, it's a nature documentary from 1954 so that's about 70 years ago. A Kidnapping Scandal: The Florence Cassez Affair

We often think of biases as connected to our political experiences, or preferences. But it is equally true to think of biases as being connected to our culture, our nationality and our language. This documentary tells a convoluted story of kidnapping, revenge and corruption. It is the reason that for a time, the French and the Mexican governments absolutely hated each other. And I had no idea that even happened because I get my news from English language sources. So that aspect of the documentary was a little surprising for me. About the case itself, it seems really strange. The documentary is presenting it as if three people weren't kidnapped. But I think if three people were kidnapped, it would be easy to prove by asking their friends and neighbors if they had seen them during that time period. The other aspect of the case that is a little disturbing, or rather very disturbing, is that it is mentioned in one of the episodes that the man who is accused of the kidnapping is still i...
