Just Say Yes

 The only reason I started to watch this was to practice Dutch, I regret my decision. It's a romantic comedy filled with the same kind of horrible people you find in other romantic comedies, but to an extreme. If the film had had any sort of self-awareness, it would have been more interesting. The main character is a selfish, obtuse woman. The main love interest is a pathologically toxic man who cannot countenance a woman not fitting the standard definition of attractiveness because she wears glasses. Best to avoid this one.

Only Murders in the Building

The plot of this series is a good one, some unsuspecting characters stumble into a murder investigation.  The characters are well acted, and the writing of their backstories is excellent.  The one thing that sticks in my craw is the way the writers treat true crime podcast fans.  It's kind of obvious that they have never listened to a true crime podcast in their lives as they depict true crime podcast fans as something like modern day Trekkies.  I don't doubt that there would be a podcast about the crimes in the series, or that the characters themselves would try like they do to make one, but that they would have fans camping outside the building, or stalking them in restaurants?  Absurd.  Leverton Review 3/5

The Reluctant Dragon

 In my quest to watch all of Disney's films chronologically, I have to say that this was the first I actually kind of liked. It starts out in black and white with a woman reading a children's story, and she says that it would make a great Disney picture. The woman and the man then travel to the Disney Studio, where he takes a tour around the place while trying to meet Walt Disney. When the tour happens, it then switches to colour. It's good because it gives you a sort of idealized sense of what it took to make animation back in those days. And the way that animation is explained is quite clever. There's one scene where Donald Duck comes to life and explains how he is moving, which caused me to chuckle. There's another scene where a classically trained opera singer is about to sing and duck noises come out of her throat. So that's also fun. The film is a bit marred by its history. Spin Dictators

 Spindictators is one of those rare books where the title tells you all you need to know about the book. It talks about a more modern form of totalitarianism, where the authoritarians in power use spin rather than fear to maintain their grip on their populace. It  is written by political scientists, so they do backup their thesis with research, it seems to be attached to idealistic. Unfortunately, the book was released before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. I say unfortunately because Putin is held up as the ultimate example of someone who doesn't use fear to control the population of his country, but uses spin to do so. Putin was of course really great at doing so for many years. And for many years he was much more effective than a more brutal dictator such as Hitler.
