The Case of Iwona Wieczorek

I've watched a lot of Netflix True-Crime documentaries, and this is the first that focuses on a case from where I live - Poland. This is the most famous disappearance in Poland in the last couple of decades. I remember when it happened, and it's true that everyone was talking about it and there were many TV shows about it and newspapers and magazines. The documentary does a good job of explaining all the theories there are about her disappearance, but the strange thing in this case is that she literally disappeared. There's footage from security cameras showing her walking back home, and then she's gone. It gives you a good idea of how crime is treated in Poland - if there's not some sensationalism, then no one cares. I had a conversation once with a police officer, and he told me that in the city where I live, which is one of the largest in Poland but not the largest, over 200 people are murdered every year. And those the general public only hears about are the ones which are the most shocking. A good example of this is when Iwona Wieczorek went missing they decided to dredge one of the biggest rivers in Poland because there was a theory that she had been abducted and disposed of in the river, and they found a human arm. They were really excited that they had found this arm, but it did not belong to Iwona, so they had uncovered another crime that was not sensationalized by the media.
