The King who Never Was

This is a true crime documentary series that is more about personalities than the events that took place. It follows the lives of the last heir to the throne of Italy and the sister of the boy who he killed. I don't think the series is as interesting as it could have been. I think the reason is that while Savoy did kill the boy it was not by any objective reasoning murder. It was manslaughter. He got into an argument and in the course of an argument fired a rifle as a warning shot, was immediately jumped by another man who pushed him into the water and as he fell the rifle discharged and the bullet went through the wall of a nearby boat and shot an 18 year old boy. The boy eventually died. The Savoy family had a lot of influence on this island and so the investigation was delayed but there was a trial and he was acquitted. Was it a fair trial? No, probably not, but convicting him of murder also I think would have been an exaggeration. The sense of entitlement that savoy emits jus...

Davy Crockett and the River Pirates

This is the second Davy Crockett movie that Walt Disney released. And if you watched the first Davy Crockett movie, you have watched this one. The plot is a little bit different, but at least the first movie had some sort of momentum. This feels like an episode that was taken from in between the events of the first movie. And as both of these movies are just television episodes that have been edited into a film that would make sense. Because in real life Davy Crockett died in the Alamo, so there is no way that there could be a sequel to the first movie. At the end of the first movie there is narration that some say Davy Crockett died some say he's still alive, but you can think what you want so the narration kind of leaves it open , so how can you have a sequel then? Putting the strangeness of the existence of this movie aside for a moment, the movie has the same charms and flaws as the first. Which makes sense because it's exactly the same everything actors, writers, etc. So ...

Quarterback

I have a difficult relationship with sports. When I was young I had a favorite hockey team because you had to have a favorite hockey team in the time and place where I grew up. I played baseball, and I even watched an entire season of the CFL. I'm sure I must have watched an entire NFL game at some point in my life, but I don't remember it. But this documentary shows why American football is one of the greatest sports in the world. It doesn't so much revolve around the sport itself, but it's more about how the sport is organized. Basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer have ridiculously long seasons. So even if you wanted to, there is no way you could watch all of your teams games. The baseball season is 156 games, and in the NFL it's 17 games. I think any fan could make the commitment to watch 17 games. The entire play-offs consists of 13 games. It's great because realistically your fans are probably only going to watch three games. In the NHL, there's a ch...

Malcolm in the Middle

It's hard to say what the problem with this series is.  It is simultaneously brilliant and rubbish. But why is it like this, is even harder to say.  I think the main problem is that the writers always choose what is funny, rather than what makes sense for the characters, and allowing the humour to spring from what the characters would actually do or say.  Then there is the baffling lack and at the same time commitment to continuity.  The series follows the lives of the members of a family of five boys and two parents.  Malcolm, is the narrator of sorts, and he (at least in the show) is claimed to be a genius. Because of the size of the family, they are not wealthy. The second-oldest child, Reese, in the show is portrayed as being a bit of a doofus, and in the end, he ends up at a menial job....and this is an example of what is frustrating about the show.  He's a brilliant cook, so why wouldn't he get a job in a restaurant?  Hal, the father figure...

Muscles and Mayhem

Watching this documentary reminds me of the time when I showed my kids an episode of He-Man. And the cartoon looked so old. I was never very into the American Gladiators program, but I remember watching it from time to time and thinking that it looked very good. I mean aesthetically it looked very good. But clearly I was mistaken. It does not look good at all. About the actual events of the story, I'm struck by a few different thoughts. The first is that it was really strange how concerned the production was that their athletes might have been using steroids, when they did not care at all about basic safety procedures to protect their athletes. And the other thing is that the show was only on for seven seasons, but it could have kept going if the company had wanted to keep investing in its development. They had a chance to create a new sport entirely. It seems like they were only interested in squeezing out as much money out of the idea as possible in the quickest amount of time. S...

Muppet Treasure Island

So my son and I watched this Disney inspired muppet version of Treasure Island and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. Although, honestly, it's a bit hard for me to be objective about any Muppet movie or television series. I really like the Muppets and as I grow older I understand how much the Muppets have shaped my sense of humor. This movie is not one which will make you laugh all the time, although there was one laugh out loud moment for me. Instead, this movie is a master of creating little moments that pass by quickly and when you have a chance to reflect on them are quite funny. If you are completely new to the world of Muppets, this movie may actually be a good jumping off point as the story is familiar enough to allow the Muppets to display their charm.
