The Case of the Dead Deadman

So I picked this film because it's in Czech, and I'm trying to learn Czech. I'm also trying to learn Dutch, and I recently watched a very bad Dutch romantic comedy. This is not as bad as that one, but I feel that it might be a case where if you don't understand Czech you might miss some of the humor. Some jokes made me chuckle a bit, but it seemed like an endless series of jokes rather than a coherent movie. But on the other hand, it might be that this movie is like Airplane!. A movie like that would be immensely hard to translate and for people who are not native speakers of the language to find funny.

Wrestlers

This is a good examination of the lives of professional wrestlers. Although to call them professional would seem to be a bit of a stretch because did they barely get paid. The series ends up being a good examination of why some people choose to pursue a career in a profession where the chances of becoming successful are even less high than in other professional sports. Wrestling is a weird combination of athleticism and acting. The series also does a good job of explaining the work it takes to deliver a believable story in this world. Another thing that sprung to my mind while I was watching this is that sometimes the difference between someone who is talented and someone who is successful just boils down to Charisma. For example, Hulk Hogan was not the most talented wrestler ever to wrestle, but he had undeniable charisma. And it kind of shows why some of the wrestlers are wrestling not for more successful promotions, but for a third tier promotion. I was inspired by this to watc...

Herbie the Love Bug

This is one of those films that I am sure I watched when I was a child, and I'm sure that I enjoyed it. But upon rewatching it an adult, it is problematic. It's problematic thematically, and it's also problematic in terms of the casual racism and dated humour. There are a couple of scenes that are digs against the counterculture movement, which makes sense because the film was released in 1968, but they don't really hold up today. It would be like somebody complaining about Millennials in a movie and then having that movie be watched 40 years later and people would have no idea what you're talking about. Obviously, we know what hippies are, but the way that they make fun of hippies is very specific to that moment in time. The Casual racism involves Chinese characters speaking with bad English accents, but it is slightly subverted when one of them turns around and speaks perfect English, although that character is portrayed as the wise old Asian man stereotype. And ...

Homeward Bound II

While certainly not a bad film, this slacks the heart and charm of its predecessor. Shadow, the older dog, was almost certainly an afterthought to the plot, but in the previous film he was a crucial older mentor figure. Sassy, the cat character, it's just mean and not sassy anymore. The animals have gone through a traumatic experience in the first film, and the Chance character has been traumatized by an experience in a pound, and yet the cat character brings this up quite often to him as a kind of joke which seems really mean and not something a friend would do. The first film was an adventure through a wilderness, and this one is the trite idea that the city is an urban wilderness. The film is set in San Francisco, but there seem to be packs of feral dogs running around in the city. This seems to be a tad unrealistic, but is a feature of many films in which there are talking animals. The American city with the biggest problem with stray dogs is Detroit with 5,000 in 2023, so we ...

In Time

In a world where time is literally money, watch as people have giant bank account numbers flash in their arms and then die in ridiculous ways and movements when their time is up. It's a heist movie pretending to be a social commentary movie in the guise of a Sci-Fi, where is the Sci-Fi technology makes no sense at all. In a world where everyone can live forever, time is somehow rationed to people. How does this work? Do people have bombs attached to their hearts? Is there somehow a parasitic time worm that can count time? If this movie were a tab more entertaining, I wouldn't really care about these questions, but alas it's not that entertaining. Amanda Seyfried it is nice to look at, but apart from that you could probably skip this movie.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

I recently watched the original version of this movie called the Incredible Journey, and while certain aspects of both films are similar, the big improvement is that the animals can actually talk in this one, and we know what is going on in their brains. Not that the first movie is bad in any way, because it isn't, it's just a totally different kind of movie. This movie is the best talking animal movie of all time. Do you have a very obscure genre of movie that you really like, and you don't have any rational reason for liking it? My obscure movie genre is the genre of talking animals. I just love them, and this is the greatest example of why these movies are fun in my opinion. Michael J fox does the voice of Chance in a charming and affable way, as is usual with most of his roles, and Sally Field is great and sassy as the cat Sassy. The writing of the movie is great, and some of the lines that Chance says are really profound. The movie doesn't make a lot of sense if y...

Just Say Yes

The only reason I started to watch this was to practice Dutch, I regret my decision. It's a romantic comedy filled with the same kind of horrible people you find in other romantic comedies, but to an extreme. If the film had had any sort of self-awareness, it would have been more interesting. The main character is a selfish, obtuse woman. The main love interest is a pathologically toxic man who cannot countenance a woman not fitting the standard definition of attractiveness because she wears glasses. Best to avoid this one.

Race to Witch Mountain

While this film is not a great or even a good movie, it is still much better than the first two parts of this franchise. Those films take the idea of aliens with superpowers visiting the Earth and presents it in a monumentally boring way. This film sticks to a formula of an alien or two aliens out to do good, but being pursued by nefarious government agents. Dwayne The Rock Johnson does a good job in this movie as a character who is down on his luck, but with a big heart. He is, of course, full of charisma and this movie came out before both his body and his ego ballooned. He does lose fights in this movie. The special effects in the first two films were bad, but they were made around 40 years ago. The special effects in this movie are also bad, and it's only 11 years old. I think perhaps they wanted to release it in 3D, or they did release it in 3D and now the version we watch has very bad effects. This is a forgettable film with a few nice scenes, so it's probably a movie to...

Scout's Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America

This is not a particularly well done documentary, but I think it is a very important story. It's the story of how the Boy Scouts of America hid abuse from parents and the authorities. It's also the story of how an immensely powerful organization is using bankruptcy proceedings to evade justice. It's also the story of how an organization can claim on the one hand that it doesn't have any problems with abuse and on the other blame any problems it does have on homosexuals. Because, the logic goes, if they can keep homosexuals out of the organization, they can keep abusers out. But that does not make any sense whatsoever. Just think about the logic of that argument for one second, and you'll see how flimsy it is. It's an important story, as I have said, but I think the history of it is much better detailed in a podcast serious called behind the bastards. So if you want it better understanding of this topic you would do better to listen to that podcast about the fou...

El Conde

It takes a while, but the movie certainly hits you over the head with its metaphor. That those in power, especially neoliberals like Margaret Thatcher, and dictators like Pinochet are vampires. It's certainly not subtle in its critique of power. The plot itself is silly and over the top. The film itself is also silly and over the top. But it's well written, well acted and well directed. I think if you don't know anything about this film before you go into it, it's probably better, but you've read this review, so it's probably too late, and I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Return from witch mountain

While it is certainly an improvement on the first film in the series, it is still for the most part boring. Vincent Price does his best as a mad scientist, but his eagerness translates neither into camp fun nor the sinister. Bette Davis does a good job as the female villain, but she isn't given much to work with either. The special effects are atrocious, especially when you consider that Star Wars had come out the year previously. There is one fun sequence where a destroyed vehicle is restored to its former condition using some sort of stop-motion, which is delightful. The two child leads are older, but no more talented or engaging as actors. There are a lot of moments that strike an odd tone, and if this film were edited differently, it could qualify as a horror film. There is one great moment where the brother realizes he has almost killed his sister several times and there are tears coming to his eyes, but that would not be a proper Disney moment.

Ahsoka

I liked this, although it is hard to say why. Perhaps after w watching a secret invasion, my brain was just happy that Disney had actually tried to make something good. The series as a whole feels short and incomplete - but there are great special effects and lightsaber duels, and a funny droid. One thing that I liked was that there were multiple flavors of evil represented in the dark side. There was the fanatic, the psychopathic, and the person who is so jaded that they don't really see any difference between good and evil. The good characters are a little bit boring but that's always been a problem in Star Wars.

Escape to Witch Mountain

Though this movie isn't without charm, it is a quite forgettable film. I think some of the special effects may have astounded younger viewers when it came out, but as a whole, I don't think the movie holds up. There is a lot of child endangerment in this movie and no adult in authority seems to care. I know it's a Disney movie, but the evil uncle angle gives off very creepy vibes. The main antagonist chews up the scenery. That's always great to see an over the top villain in a Disney live action film, but apart from that, the film gets boring and stale quite quickly. There's a mystery about where the children have come from, but every 5 minutes in the movie one of them remembers something else about their origins, and it's just boring. Although I think this film did make an impact on its audience as there are three other films in the series and a remake.

Rosa Peral's Tapes

This is a show where a person who is convicted of a crime sits down and is able to provide their point of view as to what happened. It's hard to piece together what happened just from watching this documentary as, by the entire structure of it, it is incredibly one-sided. Two people were convicted of the murder of another person, but only one was interviewed for this film. The filmmakers make a big deal about how Rosa was treated unfairly in the courtroom and in the media because she had many different kinds of sexual relations with others. And there's an attempt to make this into some kind of double standard for men and for women because a man's character would never be attacked in court when he is accused of a crime. I don't really buy that, and I don't understand why the defense didn't turn around and say yeah she is exactly that kind of person, if she's that kind of person why would she murder a partner. She could just easily go get another one, she does...

Secret Invasion

There are three good things about this series. The first is that it allows Samuel l Jackson the opportunity to display his acting talents. The other is the performance of Olivia Coleman as the head of British intelligence. She gives an effortless and charming performance that is full of deadly, dry humor. The last good thing is the very end of the series where in the present of the United States goes on a homicidal rampage and starts to assassinate undercover operatives publicly. Just so out of place that it becomes a bit campy. And those are the only good things about this series. The writing is atrociously bad, both in terms of dialogue and plot. Jackson's performance is good as I said before but it is marred by him having to deliver some of the most wooden lines that I have ever heard. The plot is no better. Nick Fury promises to find the Scrull a new home and in return for this, they will help him with some shady spy work. At the time of this deal there are about 11 Scrull on t...

The Last Empress

So both my daughter and I like Korean dramas, but our tastes are quite different, and she prefers to watch shorter series than this, so I was describing some of the events of this series to her and I said it's like a soap opera. And she says to me, "What's a soap opera?" so a soap opera for those of you who don't know, like my daughter, was a television show that aired every day usually sometime in the afternoon before kids would come back from school, and after they had been taken to school. The audience mostly was housewives and retired people. And because they had something like 300 episodes every year, some of the plot lines were crazy to keep the attention of Their audience. And this k-drama exactly like that. Some of the things that happened in the plot are ridiculous but in a great way. You kind of get the general idea of what's going to happen, but there are a few really great surprises. It starts out with the audience thinking that there are two clea...

The Case of Iwona Wieczorek

I've watched a lot of Netflix True-Crime documentaries, and this is the first that focuses on a case from where I live - Poland. This is the most famous disappearance in Poland in the last couple of decades. I remember when it happened, and it's true that everyone was talking about it and there were many TV shows about it and newspapers and magazines. The documentary does a good job of explaining all the theories there are about her disappearance, but the strange thing in this case is that she literally disappeared. There's footage from security cameras showing her walking back home, and then she's gone. It gives you a good idea of how crime is treated in Poland - if there's not some sensationalism, then no one cares. I had a conversation once with a police officer, and he told me that in the city where I live, which is one of the largest in Poland but not the largest, over 200 people are murdered every year. And those the general public only hears about are the on...

The Million Dollar Duck

Apparently, this film was absolutely detested by critics when it came out. While it certainly isn't the best Disney live action film that I have ever watched, it does have a sort of campy charm. Dean Jones and Sandy Duncan have a great Charisma and rapport with each other in the film, and it is easy to believe that they are married. Sandy Duncan's character was criticized as being an imbecile when the film came out, but I think that is a little bit harsh. She's basically Phoebe from Friends, without believing in all the woo woo crap. And there is a point in which her husband is almost decapitated, and she mispronounces a word, but I think it's understandable in her situation and funny in the movie. My two favorite parts of the film are the scene in which the dog is apparently chasing the duck in a swimming pool but it turns out that the duck is much more aggressive than the dog. I think the filmmakers want us to believe that the duck is in trouble but we can clearly se...

Ghost Busters: Answer the Call

I am giving this movie a 10-star rating, not because it deserves it, to counteract all the hate it has received over the years. There are two things that prevent this from being a great movie, and make it merely a good movie. The first is that for some reason it's a reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise but the original Ghostbusters, those were still alive, make cameos. I think you could have made a very similar movie without making it a reboot. And in fact, if it hadn't been a reboot, it would have made a lot more sense. It would have made sense for a team of scientists to come up with the idea of catching ghosts independently of the first team. Now why they hadn't heard of that team before is a complete mystery, that is a bigger problem throughout the whole Ghostbusters franchise that is not specific to this film. The second thing that prevents this from being a great film is the CGI which is just not high quality and there is quite a bit of it so that does distract from ...

Candleshoe

Candleshoe is not a movie that will make you burst out laughing, but it is full of entertaining moments and genuine heart that manages to avoid cliché. The movie stars Jodie Foster as Casey Brown, a child who may hold the key to an immense fortune. Helen Hayes plays ladies Saint Edmund and David Niven plays the butler with an absurd amount of quiet energy. It's a movie that sums up the spirit of Disney without any animation or cheesy songs. It's a movie where a character is tempted to do wrong, but ultimately decides to do the right thing. Jodie Foster is charismatic in the lead. It's easy to see how she was so successful in her later career. And an interesting bit of trivia is that part of the plot involves her character having a scar on her shoulder, in real life she has the same scar which she got while acting in another Disney movie called Napoleon and Samantha where she was almost mauled by a lion. But there are no lions in this film, and I don't think any of the a...

The Last Hours of Maro Biondo

I wanted to read other reviews of this series before posting mine, and I was quite surprised by the number of viewers who gave the series a bad review while 100% agreeing with the point of view of the filmmakers. So in effect, they were mad that they agreed with what they watched. As a true-crime series, it has an interesting point of view which judging by the reviews is not a popular way of doing things, and that is to say they believe there was no crime. Instead, it focuses on a mother's increasingly delusion attempts to get justice for her son and the media sharks that fed this delusion. I think the problem stems from the fact that when a person dies, especially a young person, there is a lot of confusion as to what happened. This is coupled with the fact that in every country there is not enough money to sufficiently examine the death of every person. In this particular case, the initial investigators rushed to a conclusion that the death was accidental and suicidal without ac...

Missing Dead or Alive

I just read the featured review, and it was claiming that the show was staged. Unlike the featured review, watch the whole series and I do not think that it was staged. I think Netflix went to this little town and said, we will give you x amount of money if you allow us to insert ourselves to a ridiculous degree into the criminal justice process. If it was staged, I don't think this would have been so egregious. But they do film people who are having the worst moments of their lives, some of whom are the subjects of criminal investigations, so it seems like the presence of these cameras does little to increase the chances of objectivity and the law being followed. The filmmakers want us to feel compassion for the people who undergo the situations and the law enforcement officers who have to try and solve these cases and the mental and physical toll it takes on them, however it would have been much less ethically problematic if they had indeed done re-enactments. It did get me to t...

Freaky Friday 1976

All parts of this film were quite enjoyable, it is for the most part too dated to be worth a watch. It is the original body swapping film, so if you want to see where it all began, this is a good place to start. Jodie Foster does a great job portraying a typical teenage girl of 1976, you can see the charisma she would have in later classic performances. Barbara Harris though steals the show when she performs as a 13-year-old inhabiting the body of a typical housewife from 1976. In fact, this for me exemplifies one of the main features of a movie like this. That is to say, the adult actor or actress can have a much more enjoyable time portraying the Wild and frenetic energy of a teenager, whereas the child actor or actress must be far more restrained. It's also a surprise to see Gomez Adams as a straight man. That feels like a waste. Mentioned before that it's a dated movie, but I think it would have felt dated when it came out as well. They try to portray the slang of the time...
